Wenzhou has been seriously hot and muggy lately...I swear my hair has grown exponentially in size in the last four days! Holy 100% Muggy Town Batman! As you know I also recently joined a new gym, it’s about 10-15 minutes walking distance from my apartment give/take the busy traffic lights and with this heat I get a nice warm up before I hit spinning class or the treadmill. The sweat begins as I leave my apartment, so you can imagine my shirt is completely soaked through when I’m done with my workout…I tend to sweat like a dude, I know, I know…it’s a bit much! Lately it’s been just like winter time (with no heat) except well not, it’s actually hot…kind of what I think the surface of the sun would feel like. But in the winter they don’t turn on the heat, in the summer they don’t turn on the air…don’t be mistaken, they have it, they just don’t use it. Apparently, they’d rather sit around not doing anything but sweating and then smelling each others sweaty body odor. As I sit in my office and sweat, literally sweat through my shirt.
Spring has officially arrived in Wenzhou, and just like everywhere else…it rains a lot. The rain makes the streets smell, especially if you’re on the ones with the restaurants…they dump old food down the drains I swear = stickiness during downpours. It's rained three out of the last four days and the one day it didn't rain, I decided to go to the park for a walk and got fried like a piece of chicken in a southern household! Ouch! The summers here, I’ve heard are hot and muggy but this last week has proved it to be entirely true. The hazy sun is no joke, self-note: wear sunscreen ALL of the time...
They say a lot of things are good for you here, examples: drinking hot water all of the time or when they’re handing me something… ‘Here eat this, it’s good for you.’ or ‘Here eat this, it’s good for women.’ I have come to the conclusion that this is just one of their evil ploys to get me to react to different things…so, I’m polite and take the smallest piece of something but the next thing that tastes like a foot is going into a tissue! I tried this thing (yes that’s its technical name!), it did, literally taste like a foot. It was orangey-yellow fruit thing and was a bit sticky…and completely disgusting. Unlike the chicken foot which was hard and chewy (for a taste yourself: try chewing/eating your pinky finger) that’s a chicken foot texture, this 'thing' was mushy (one of my no-no’s when it comes to fruit or anything really) this thing was, it was, well just...to use the term from a 3 year old…Yucky!
However this past week there is a bonus---I got a new office, and with it an installation of a ball pit.
And it's not just fun for the kids... :D It’s loud in the office on the weekends, all of the kids that have class; they hang around in my office after class, so it gets a bit noisy. Luckily, I don’t have classes during my office hours on the weekdays, so I can actually get work accomplished.
Since it is so hot, I'm making sure do drink cold water or not so hot water during and after classes. My goodness, I'm seriously sweating typing this, sweating sitting, sweating standing…I’m sure I lose at least a pint of sweat in a day, not exaggerating in the least. The water intake has increased do to the giant loss of water during the day...mind you, I have to carry water from the store because you can't drink the water unless you boil it. And trust me, only the Chinese drink hot water in the middle of a Sun/Heat Stroke Day. Unless it contains delish caffeinated beverage with the word, latte, mocha or something 'acchino attached, I'm not drinking any hot beverages anytime soon. As I’m sure the kids parents would prefer that I not pass out in the middle of class while teaching the students…haha, what a site that would be! ‘Ahh, louche….louche!’ That’s Chinese for ‘Ahhh, teacher….teacher!' Let's keep the cool water flowing!
